PPROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF AN ALEBRIJE

Carving

To carve an alebrije, the wood that is worked is copal and the resin is used for incense, but different woods such as walnut, willow, cedar, sabino and tree roots are also used, once the appropriate wood is selected, we see the shape if it is curved, we carve the piece for one or several days depending on how complicated the piece is.

Restored

The restoration process includes the drying of the piece, which has to be left to dry naturally, this is the longest process, later we have to polish it with sandpaper and then add liquids to preserve the wood and in the future do not have problems with insect, followed by this step we have to repair the pieces in each of their imperfections we use a natural resonator that we create with the sawdust dust that arises when cutting the wood and a little glue to later polish again with a lot of sandpaper thinner to give a smooth finish to the piece and thus we can begin to put a sealer on the piece so that the background that we decide to apply adheres easily.

Painting

This is the last step of the decoration, where we use different brushes, some to shade, others to anchor and another finer to make the decorations in the alebrijes, the time it takes to paint, depends on the size of each piece, from 2 months to 4 months depending on the size and type of painting, we use colorful decoration as a symbol of life and joy, each piece is unique.
